THE ART OF TRUTHFUL MEDITATION

Philippians 4:8 (NIV 1984) Finally, brothers, whatever is true...think about such things.

The first thing we are to “think” about in this passage is truth. In essence it refers to what is real. Now with this one word we have just opened a bottomless treasure of topics for thinking that can never be exhausted. What is true? What is real? Where does one start? The postmodern man has to guess here, and can never be sure that he is on the right track. To him truth is subjective to each person, thus having no basis for which to call anything true, but we who are followers of Jesus Christ have much more of a sure foundation. We believe in objective truth. There are absolutes that are the bedrock on which we build our lives. It doesn't take much observation to notice that secular people and followers of Christ live in two different realities. One reality is true while the other is false. One is filled with everything that is right, pure, and excellent; the other with deception, lies, and destructive philosophies. As believers we have been given the Word of God, preserved on paper in the form of an ancient text, presented to us in a living person who is the Word made flesh (Jn 1:1,14), and placed on the tablets of our hearts (Jer 31:33; 2 Cor 3:3). For our thinking to be sanctified and renewed it has to start with a belief in objective truth, along with a belief of where that objective truth is found - in the word of God that can never be exhausted. The assignment to think (meditate) on what is true is an eternal assignment. We will be seeking to understand it forever, because ultimately truth is a Man (Jn 14:6). Beloved, lets get our Bibles out and do what Ezekiel did - let’s eat the scroll (Eze 3:1).
